Swing Yer Partner (but not at the same time)...

Recently F's entire grade hosted a fun day for their families called "Pioneer Day". Each student gave a speech about a famous person from our state, they sang songs, played their recorders, square danced and ended the festivities with a picnic lunch. The kids all did a phenomenal job and I was a proud mama as I watched F deliver his speech with utter perfection!

However, as with most things surrounding my children, there was a VERY interesting conversation regarding Pioneer Day. I need to go back in time a little bit (names have been changed to avoid embarrassing anyone)...

Our neighbor's son Jimmy is one year ahead of F in school. Last summer they were discussing the teachers they each hoped they would get and Jimmy said...
"In 4th grade you have to square dance...with a GIRL!"

This was enough to send F into a frenzy of stress for the remainder of the summer, but the school year started and before long, the 4th graders were learning to square dance. Much to my pleasant surprise, aside from a little bit of grumbling when they first started, F didn't complain about it!

Now, here is where you have to try to visualize the scenario. Imagine our little family of 5 sitting around the dinner table doing our usual "Best Part/Worst Part" (we go around the table and each person shares the best part of their day and then the worst part of their day). As F shared his Best & Worst, my husband's face was getting redder and redder as he was stifling hysterical laughter...

(F) "Best part was square dancing."

{I was shocked and had to know more}...

(me) "Really? Are you enjoying Square Dancing?"

(F) "Yeah, it's really not so bad. Kinda fun."

(me) "Who do you dance with?"

{details, details, I want details}...

(F) "Suzie. But there are more girls in our grade than boys so some of the boys alternate and some of the girls dance with 2 boys."

(me) "Oh, I see."

(F) "Yep, so I am one of the boys that alternates."

(me) "Oh."

(F) "Yeah, so me and Johnny are both doing Suzie."

{wait, did he just say that he and Johnny are both "doing" Suzie???}...

(me) "Really?"

(F) "Yes, but not at the same time."

{Oh my...I am SO glad that he is only 9 and has no idea what he is implying!}...

(me) "Oh, well that's good."

(F) "Yeah, that'd be awkward."

{He really doesn't know what he is implying, I swear!}...

(me) "Yes, that would definitely be awkward."

long pause...

"Yeah, cuz if we were both doing her at the same time, how would we balance?"

{Oh God.}

(me) "Pass the salt, please."

Here are some pictures of Pioneer Day...
